Healthcare staff shortages are in the media weekly, if not daily. The pandemic has taken a big slice out of an already stretched system. Healthcare staff shortages exist across the country and across continents.
Emergency rooms are closing due to staff shortages. It’s dire.
One of the number one strategies to address healthcare staff shortages?
Higher education. More certified professionals.
But there’s a problem (or two…).
Healthcare sectors know about Swiss cheese models of accident causation (and prevention) — like the one in the image.
Training and certifying more staff, especially in Canada, where for every 10 people retiring, only 8 are entering the workforce.
Where do health professionals get certified?
Post-secondary institutions. Higher education.
But…
A ghost of silence is haunting post-secondary.
Harassment, bullying, and discrimination are workplace hazards. There’s legislation in place to try and address those — a structural strategy.
