Communication
Communicating respectfully across differences.
Navigating dialogues about Systemic Racism.
This is a difficult topic, in media regularly and many people’s minds. It’s also many people’s experience. Systemic Racism. What is it? And how to communicate across and within it?
I have no ‘solutions’ to this difficult and tension-filled issue — But, I have been thinking about, pondering, and piloting some education and skill-building for years.
The image above is a ‘systems’ view for society — and a model that I have used (and many others) for contemplating Respectful Communication across differences.
We are all different. We approach our communication with different experiences.
At the core of any communication is one’s Self. The individual. Me. This is where all communication begins and ends.
After many years in various sectors, in various communities, and doing a lot of research — I have yet to see a consistent definition of “systemic racism”.
I have also yet to find good, effective training on how to communicate in the midst of it, accusations of it, and feelings of it.
